The ceremony is the part they remember.

I'm Catherine. I write and conduct wedding ceremonies all over Ireland, and because I'm a registered solemniser, the ceremony I write just for the two of you is the very same one that legally marries you. One lovely day, and no repeating yourselves in an office somewhere.

I take the time to really know you

Before I write a single word, we sit down together. Usually more than once, and nearly always over a cup of tea.

I want to hear how you met. What your families are like. The daft thing one of you does that the other one has decided to put up with forever. Then I go away and write a ceremony that sounds like the two of you, not a template with your names dropped into the gaps. No two couples have ever had the same ceremony from me, and honestly I wouldn't know how to start.

So do bring me your odd little requests. A handfasting. Your children standing up beside you. A granny who has sworn blind she won't cry. A song nobody in the history of weddings has ever walked in to. And once, a unity candle got a bit too friendly with a dried flower arrangement and quietly set the whole lot alight halfway through the vows. We put it out, nobody so much as flinched, I kept talking, and their guests are still telling the story.

That's twenty years around weddings for you. I know what tends to go sideways and how to sort it without a soul in the back row noticing. Couples tell me afterwards that the ceremony turned out to be their favourite part of the whole day, and that is genuinely the loveliest thing anyone can say to me.

Come and follow along

The days as they happen, in Catherine's own words.

There's a ceremony somewhere in Munster most weeks, and nearly always a photograph of the moment just before or just after it. If you're trying to picture how your own day might feel, this is about as close as you'll get to standing quietly at the back of the room.

Facebook is where most of her couples find her, and it is the quickest way to reach her with a small question. Anything about dates is better on the phone or through the form, where she'll spot it properly.

Shall we see if your date is free?

I only ever take one ceremony a day, so lovely dates do go early. Tell me when and where and I'll come straight back to you, always within 24 hours.
